I, as always, loved filming this episode! I’ve grown up with a lot of Jim Henson movies so was really nice to revisit him and learn more in depth about how the puppets (and muppets) came to be!

Quick disclaimer: I was quite tired filming this ep, turns out I don’t sleep the best during heatwaves! So I do make a couple mistakes like calling Sharon - Shannon and saying one reviewer gave the film 5 and a half stars aha. And also, if you’re watching the podcast, the big brown spot just under my ear is a patch test for a lash tint. I can assure you I did not miss it during my shower 😅

One of my most pressing questions about this movie was ‘How much of this movie is accurate to Steven Spielberg’s childhood?’ and found out some really interesting answers!

Thank you so much for coming to find my new film club “Get to the Plot”!

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned movie buff to just searching for a new recommendation. I aim to create a space where movie lovers can share their thoughts, find new favourites and feel like part of a big community.

How this goes…

At the beginning of each week a new movie will be chosen. You’ll be able to watch for free and comment your takes on the film in the chat thread, then finally, I’ll collate the reviews and share them in a weekly podcast. This will also include research about the movie for you to enjoy.

Movie genres will range vastly as will the obscurity of film that is chosen for the week. (Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to watch a 3 hour art film every week.) From action to animation, cult classics to hidden gems, they’ll be a movie for everyone. and who knows, maybe you’ll discover a new top 4 favourite…

My biggest passion and focus for this club, however, is making this page accessible to everyone. Therefore, every film of the week will be chosen from platforms that are completely free to stream. Everyone deserves to enjoy the art of filmmaking!

In a world that pants over a raunchy regency remake, “Wuthering Heights” (2026) had huge potential to really take off with a new dynamic influence. Gifting us a trailer that so powerfully pushes desire and sex provided promise for an avant-garde interpretation of a beautifully crafted classic. However, it is with regret that I must write how this movie falls somewhat short of being a poignant yet daring exploration.

Now, I want to make abundantly clear before delivering my review - I had not read the source material nor did I research the plot before attending the screening. By keeping away from, essentially, spoilers (even if they are 175 year old spoilers), I wanted to create a reaction that wasn’t purely based on the fact that things were/weren’t the same as the novel. Although, since delving into the details of the original plot, I struggle to see why director Emerald Fennell discarded as much of the intricacies as she did.

The synopsis of the movie, described by IMDB, reported the plot to ensue “a passionate and tumultuous love story” between Heathcliff and Cathy Earnshaw from youth to adulthood, where we follow along in their “intense and destructive relationship” characterised by performers Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. Comparing this to a summary of the initial narrative, The Reader Guide to Wuthering Heights states that the book’s main focus is not the assumed Romeo and Juliet “star crossed lovers” trope but chases themes of desire for revenge and how the protagonists flaws lead to their own downfalls. I felt the passion from Fennell’s version and the romance did make me feel… things… but wouldn’t a tale of using lust as a way of revenge made for a much more insightful and inspiring adaptation? Moments were held in such a way in scenes early on in the movie which felt enticing but were swiftly abandoned. I found it tough to empathise with these unlikable characters in their final moments being in the unruly depths of love when they had committed such selfish acts - no matter how many violins you use to underscore it. The modern aspects worked harmoniously together, disheartening viewers when slowly becoming less relevant as the movie went on.

Plot aside, I’d like to emphasise some of the things I truly loved about the movie. First of all, the opening. The film kicks off with a black screen, complete darkness in the cinema, with only the sound of what the audience is led to believe is somebody potentially having some “me-time”. After all the awkward laughter produced by the 15 year olds in the room, the screen ignites to an image of a potential “wrong ‘un” who is being hanged. Immediately, this set an incredible tone for the story ahead. Fennell effectively creating this sudden comparison of pleasure and torture in the matter of seconds likely convinced the audience of the take we were about to witness. It felt bitter and awkward which, sadly after that moment, was only felt again when forced to watch Margot Robbie pointlessly fingering a trout’s orifice (but far less riveting). The beginning felt a good amount of unsettling to edge us into what was hoped to come but ending up not being necessary when we, as an audience, weren’t pushed any further emotionally.

Overall, the opening up until the title card (which in itself was a work of art on its own) captivated the audience and now smoothly leads me onto my next appraisal, the soundtrack. Having one of the most relevant and cutting edge artists have creative control of your films music is ballsy, but worked significantly well. Charli XCX’s music is already quite reminiscent of the overall style Fennell was aiming for which I believe was “tortuous yearning”. Her music knows how to either yank at your party-girl heartstrings or scratch the itches in your brain with a rusty knife (her song ‘House’ being a great example of that). That being said, the only slight malfunction that ruined this aspect was the editing in conjunction with the music. Too many cuts and changes back and forth between scenes gave a heavy impression of a music video at times. Ironically, reminders of the “Chevy Blazer” advert mid Barbie (2023) came flooding back, making it feel quite commercialized all of a sudden. It then later became disconcerting when Charli XCX had essentially been cut from the rest of the movie and replaced with a string orchestra. Charli’s music could have played an integral part in breaking many peoples hearts by the end of the movie but, alas, went with a more traditional approach when underscoring. This consistency could have made the film as effective as Ben Folds musical efforts in the animated classic Over the Hedge (2008) and its masterclass in soundtrack crafting (iykyk) .

My last credit to this film, most importantly, lies with the set/costume design and the overall cinematography and it comes to no surprise to say this when the creator’s previous work is the formidable Saltburn (2023), which is, in my eyes, an edgy filmmaker’s guide to camera artistry. The use of colour and patterns cleverly depicted the characters emotions and conflicting desires and was the main consistently successful part about this movie. Highlighting, in particular, the “skin room” - a creative symbol for Cathy’s imprisonment within a shell of her own beauty (so grotesque yet incredibly smart!). Likewise, the shot of Heathcliff and Cathy in her black veil at Mr Earnshaw’s funeral mirroring an image of the wedding they both longed for but now both mourn for. Fennell’s simple yet effective ideas such as these had great thought and clear development, and it pains me to wonder why other areas felt more neglected. For instance, Isabella’s downfall after marrying Heathcliff could’ve been a lot more compelling but felt lost within the pining love story which, because of this disregard, began to lose value and my overall respect. I understand that Fennell has stated that this was meant to be a depiction of what her 14 year old self interpreted it to be but I highly doubt she can look back on things now and believe disregarding so much of the talk on racial/societal pressures and the supernatural gothic elements which all would have fallen into the stylistic concept Fennell was going for quite smoothly.

In my “Letterboxd” review (the app in every cinephile’s starter kit), I rated this film 3 stars. I believe this film to be a film school’s new archived classic for analysis because of how the ideas are being hinted at but executed with untapped potential. Hopefully, for Fennell moving forward, she develops future movies that are fully original and maybe with collaborative efforts. I do believe, however, this film shall open doors for more ambitious craftings of classic stories.
